| DESCRIPTION(last modified February 19, 2017 )Bern tram network opened in 1892 (initial pneumatic/steam tram) and it was totally electrificated in 1901. After the world war II many routes were closed and substituted by ordinary bus service; last closure took place in 1965 reducing the track length to 13,6 km.
Network was extended on December 2010 with the so-called Bern West Tram addiction. It consists in a 7 km extension, which mostly lies along the alignement of 2 former trolleybus lines; the new track is connected to the existing tram system by a common section (Kaufmannischer Verband-Unterfuhrung). At Unterfuhrung it branches in 2 stretches: the northern one serves Bethlehem area and terminates at Brunnen (connecting the high speed railway station and a shopping and leisure center), the southern one runs along a pre-existing trolleybus track terminating at Bumpliz.
A further extension (Guisanplatz-Wankdorf Bahnhof) was completed in 2012.
