DESCRIPTION
The construction of Nurnmberg metro took place starting from years '60s.
The first metro line (U1) opened in 1972 (Langwasser Sud-Bauernfeindstrasse) and it was extended in 1974, 1975, 1978, 1980, 1982, 1985 and 1998; it currently runs from Langwasser Sud to Hardhohe along a partly underground track. U1 interchanges with U2 and U3 at Plarrer and Hauptbahnhof.
The second line (U2) opened in 1984 (Plarrer-Schweinau) and it was extended in 1986, 1988, 1990, 1993, 1996 and 1997; U2 is operated as a driverless system (automated metro operations) since 2010. It interchanges with metro line U1 (see above) and it shares part of the track with U3 (Plarrer-Rathenauplatz); furthermore, U2 also interchanges with the ground level railway network (at Nordostbahnhof, Hauptbahnhof, Rothenburger Strasse and Schweinau).
A third line (U3, first section Gustav Adolf Strasse-Maxfeld) opened on 15 June 2008; it was extended in 2011 (Maxfeld-Friedrich Ebert Platz) and 2017 (Friedrich Ebert Platz-Nordwestring). U3 is totally automated (driverless system).
