DESCRIPTION
Naples metro network consists in 2 lines (Line 1 and Line 6) and it's integrated by 2 suburban underground railway lines (Line 2, Linea Arcobaleno: Napoli-Giugliano).
Line 1 opened in 1993 (Vanvitelli-Colli Aminei) and it was extended in 1995 (Colli Aminei-Piscinola) 2001 (Vanvitelli-Museo), 2002 (Museo-Dante), 2011 (Dante-Università) and 2013 (Università-Garibaldi). Vanvitelli-Salvator Rosa section runs in a curved gallery (with an average vertical gradient of 5.5%).
Line 6 (light metro) connects the agglomerations of Fuorigrotta and Mergellina; its first section (Museo-Mergellina) opened in 2007. This line was built re-using part of the former infrastructures of the so-called Linea Tranviaria Rapida (LRT line) which had to be opened in occasion of Italia '90 Football Worldcup but was never completed.
Line 2 (15 km, 12 stops) isn't a properly said metro line, being a suburban underground railway track passing through the city; it was opened in 1925 and electrified in 1935. Line 2 interchanges with Line 1 (at Museo/Piazza Cavour and at Garibaldi) and with Line 6 (at Mostra and Mergellina stops).
Linea Arcobaleno (Napoli-Giugliano-Aversa) is another suburban underground railway track (10.5 km, 5 stops) connecting part of the the northern territory of Naples metropolitan area. It interchanges with metro Line 1 at Piscinola stop.
