DESCRIPTION
Munich U-Bahn system opened in 1971 (U6: Kieferngarten-Goetheplatz); it currently consists in 6 lines (which can be divided in 3 groups: U1/U2, U3/U6, U4/U5 each one with part of the track in common) that run almost totally underground (except for 2 short teminal segments of U5 and U6).
U6 opened in 1971 (Kieferngarten-Goetheplatz) and it was extended in 1975, 1978 and 1983; it connects Garching (outside Munich, northern end) to Klinikum Glosshadern, partly running along existing tunnels formerly used by trams. U3 started its service in 1972 (Munchner Freiheit-Olympiazentrum) in occasion of the Olympic Games; it was extended in 1975, 1978, 1989, 1991, 2007 and 2010. U3 currently goes from the Olympic area to Furstenried West. U6 and U3 share a common section (Munchen Freiheit-Implerstrasse).
U2 opened in 1980 (Scheidplatz-Neuperlach Sud) and it was extended in 1993, 1996 and 1999; it currently runs from Felmoching (northern terminal and railways interchange point to the airport) to Messestadt Ost. U1 opened in 1983 (Central Station-Rotkreuzplatz) and it was extended in 1997, 1998, 2003 and 2004; U1 currently runs from Olympia-Einkaufs-zentrum to Mangfallplatz. U1 and U2 share a common section (Munchen Hauptbahnhof-Kolumbusplatz).
U4/U5 opened in 1984 (common section: Westendstrasse-Karlsplatz). U4 was extended in 1986 and 1988; it currently runs from Westens Strasse to Arabellapark. U5 was extended in 1988; it currently runs from Laimer Platz to Neuperlach-Sud. U4 and U5 share a common section (Westendstrasse-Max Weber Platz).
