DESCRIPTION
The first stretch (Kremlyovskaya-Gorki) of Kazan metro (Tsentralnya Liniya) opened in 2005, just in time for the millennium of the city foundation. Tsentralnya Liniya (Central Line) is a part of an ambitious plan which consisted in a 3 lines network (Tsentralnya Liniya, Vokzalnaya Liniya, Privolzhsko-Savinovskaya Liniya; total length: 46 km) and in a suburban light railway line connecting the city centre with the airport (that had to be completed in time for 2013 Universiad).
Although an initial plan (years '30s) for a surface urban rail line hasn't been realized, the construction of a full metro network was approved by USSR govern only in 1979, when Kazan population overtook the million of inhabitants. During Soviet Union crisis works were delayed but were never completely stopped, so that the first section of Tsentralnya Liniya could be opened in 2005, followed by Gorki-Prospekt Pobedy extension on December 2008. Tsentralnya Liniya was successively extended also in 2010 (Kremlyovskaya-Kozya Sloboda) and 2013 (Kozya Sloboda - Aviastroitelnaya).
