DESCRIPTION
Plans for a metro system in Kharkiv have been considered since the beginning of XX century; however they couldn't be completely developed after 1934 (that time the capital moved from Kharkiv to Kiev) and they were furthermore delayed by the world war II and its heavy damages. Metro plans were recovered only during years '60s, when a remarkable demographic growt brought the old surface tram network near to the saturation.
Kholodnogorsko-Zavodskaya line (now simply named Kholodnogorskaya or Line 1) opened in 1975, after 7 years of works; Line 1 was extended in 1978.
In two decades, the first line was followed by other two lines (Saltovskaya or Line 2: opened in 1984, extended in 1986; Alekseevskaya or Line 3: opened in 1995, extended in 2010 and 2016) giving the network its current asset (a typhical eastern Europe metro morphology: radial lines forming a ring around the city centre).
