DESCRIPTION
Berlin transit network combines metro (U-Bahn), suburban railways (S-Bahn) and conventional tram lines.
Berlin metro is one of the oldest (its first line opened in 1902) and most extended European metro systems. After the world war II U-Bahn kept operating from one side of Berlin to the other until the Wall completion (1961); from that date, the metro lines whose tracks laid in both side of the town (U6, U8) began travelling through East Berlin skipping all stations on GDR territory (ghost stations). All ghost stations were reopened after the demolition of the Wall (1989).
There are 2 types of metro lines in Berlin: small-profile lines (U1, U2, U3, U4) operated by 2.3 m wide metro car; and large-profile lines (U5, U55, U6, U7, U8, U9) operated by 2.65 m wide metro car . The current metro network consists in 10 lines.
