DESCRIPTION
The first Duisburg tram line opened in 1881 (initial horse tram); electrification took place in 1897.
Starting fron years '70s, it was decided to upgrade the tram system to premetro/Stadtbahn standards (combining ground level and underground sections). Premetro service started in 1992 (with the completion of the first tunnel section from Steinsche Gasse/Rathaus to Duissern, followed by Duissern-Meiderich Bahnhofin tunnel section in 2000). The current network consists in 3 lines (2 ordinary tram lines plus 1 premetro line).
