DESCRIPTION
Brussels Metro network derives from an initial premetro system, nowadays mostly operated as a full metro. The first tunnel section to be used by the existing tram (Schuman-De Brouckere, that is currently part of Line 1) was built in 1964-1969, followed in 1970 by a section of the "small-ring" (Madou-Porte de Narmur, that is currently part of Line 2). The "outer ring" gallery segment (Diamant-Boileau) opened in 1972-1975; it's still operated as a premetro section (tram Line 7, partly running underground). Other extensions of the initial underground sections were completed in the next years.
The first full metro sections (Line 1: De Brouckere-Tomberg; Line 5: De Brouckere-Beaulieu) opened in 1976; the north-south premetro underground section from Gare du Nord to Lemonnier opened in the same year.
The small ring was upgraded into a full metro (Line 2, Line 6) in 1988; Line 2 and Line 6 interchange with Line 1 and Line 5 at Loi and Gare de l'Ouest.
