VolgogradThe so-called Volgograd Skorostnoy Tramvaj, as well as Kryvyi Rih (Ukraine) Metrotram, has been planned in USSR during years '70s with the aim to develope an efficient rapid urban mass transport system to be applied in other towns responding better than traditional trams to the needs of desplacements in the city centers. Volgograd (previously named Stalingrad), manteins a traditional tram network (more than 200 km long, artculated in 3 sub-networks: northern, central, southern) which has been integrated by Skorostnoy Tramvaj LRT line (connecting northern and central tram nets). Skorostnoy Tramvaj shares a northern section with one of the tram lines (from Traktorozavod to Stadion Monolit) and goes on underground from just south of the stadium emerging north of Pionerskaya stop, before joining PI. Chekistov.A southern underground extension (4,2 km from Pionerskaya to Yelshanka) opened on December 2011.
