ViennaVienna Metro (U-Bahn) is part of a rich integrated public transport offer, as well as suburban railways (S-Bahn, opened in 1962), tramway and buses. Besides totally new lines (U1, U3, and also parts of U2 and U6), U-Bahn has other section derived from pre-metro (U2) and S-Bahn (U4, U6) systems.
Hutteldorf-Heiligenstadt (1976) and Reumannplatz-Karlsplatz (1978) have been the first sections to be opened; the former is part of U4 (obtained by the conversion of a S-Bahn line - WD -, 16.4 km long), the latter belongs to U1 (currently 14.6 km long). U2 (currently 7.8 km long) followed 2 years later (1980), as the result of the conversion in a full metro of an existing tramway tunnel built in years '60s; for this reason it has the shortest average distance between the stations and, consequently, the lowest commercial speed. Line U6 opened in 1989 (17.5 km, the longest of the network); U6 uses a speciphic rolling stock, due to the conservation of some original Jugendstil station buildings designed by Otto Wagner. In 1991 the last line opened (U3, 13.5 km), running along an almost totally underground route.
Schottenring - Stadion U2 extension (towards the stadium) was opened on May 2008 just in time for the 2008 European Football Championships; a further extension up to Aspernstrasse opened on October 2010.
