Line 3 (S7000)
Turin
The first section (Fermi-XVIII Dicembre) of automated metro Line 1 opened in Turin as scheduled on Febrary 2006 (just before the beginning of 2006 Olympics Winter Games), connecting Collegno to the city center. The construction of this section (which runs from has been completed in 5 years thanks to the adoption of the TBM (tunnel boring machines) technique.A further section (XVIII Dicembre-Porta Nuova) opened in 2007. The intermediate stop of Porta Susa has been activated on September 2011, while a southern extension from Porta Nuova to Lingotto opened on March 2011. The route is interconnected both with high speed trains (Porta Susa stop) and regional railways (Lingotto and Porta Nuova, the latter served also by a new north-south tramway line). The automated line interchanges also with some parking areas (Fermi - next to a motorway link road -, Marche, Rivoli and Lingotto). Other extensions are planned in the next future (Lingotto-Piazza Bengasi, Collegno-Cascine Vica).
Besides the automated metro, Turin also has an ancient tramway network (current lenght: about 180 km) which opened in 1871 (first Italian horse tramway) and was electrified in 1898. In years '80s new LRT lines sholuld be added, but just one (Line 3) was actually completed in 1987, connecting Vallette to Largo Tortona; two years later it was extended across Po'River up to Hermada terminus.
A new tram line was added in 1990 (just before Soccer FIFA World Cup); Line 4 connects Torino Esposizioni to Stampalia, serving the law court offices and some Universtity faculties. A speciphic branch (called "Line 9/") served for a certain period Delle Alpi Stadium.
Tramway main line is route n. 4, which runs north-south along one of the most important road axis in Turin (Corso Giulio Cesare-Corso Unione Sovietica, passing through the city center). In 2001 the southern part of this line has been extended from piazzale Caio Mario to strada del Drosso (Mirafiori sud), while in 2003 a norther expansion has been completed from Piazza Derna to Piazzale Autostrade (strada delle Cascinette). Works are going for another northern extension from Cascinette to Falchera (via delle Querce); this 2 km section will be in tunnel for 700 m (below Milan-Turin railway, with an important underground stop at Stura railway station, close to an interchange parking area).
Modern Alstom Cityway rolling stock (full low floor) has been adopted from 2001.
