Sofia
Sofia has a typical medieval urban shape, with a city center characterized by narrow streets connected to the suburbs by some main radials, supported by ring connections. Because of the increasing of private motorization (currently more than 500.000 motor vehicles), in the last decades the streets congestion along suburbs-center routes has constantly increased; this was one of the reasons for the construction of a modern metro system.
Sofia metro Line 1 (Obelya-Tsarigradsko Shosse) opened in 1998 (Slivnitsa Boulevard-Konstantin Velichkov Boulevard section, 6.4 km), with further extensions in 1998, 1999, 2000, 2003, 2009 and 2012. Line 1 will be completed by a southern (Sofia Business Park) and a south-eastern extensions (to the airport, under construction since 2009).
Line 2 it's under construction since December 2009 (Nadezhda-Lozenets section, with an intermediate stop at the railway station); the network in its final asset (52 km, 1 million pax/day) will have the tipical central triangle (Serdika, NDK and St. Kliment Ohridski stops).
