In Seville the first section (Ciudad Expo-Condequinto) of a new LRT (Line 1, about half of the track underground) opened on 02 April 2009. This project partly recovers an original plan (years '70s) of a 3 lines heavy metro network, whose construction was suspended at the beginning of years '80s because of the risk to damage some historical buildings. So a new network project has been developed; it's based on 4 LRT lines (Line 1 is the first to be realized) and some connecting modern tram lines, instead of the original heavy metro plan. Line 1 (completed on November 2009 with Condequinto-Olivar de Quinto section) runs from Mairena del Aljarafe (interchange stop) to Montequinto, with 22 stops serving the Expo area (Ciuidad Expo, in Mairena del Aljarafe), the university, the city center and some railway stations (San Bernardo, Guadaira).
On 28 October 2007 the so-called MetroCentro has been opened (Prado-Plaza Nueva section); the concept of this tram line is to connect the future LRT lines 1 and 2. The first stretch will be extended at both terminals (towards Santa Justa and Puerta Osario).
Besides Line 1 and MetroCentro, the whole network will be improved by other 3 LRT lines. Line 2 will run east-west, with a central underground section; in a further phase it could be extended towards the airport (east) and Aljarafe (west). In order to have at least an interchange point with Line 1, a short underground section could be realized connecting S. Justa (L2) and Nervion (L1) stops. Line 3 will run north-south, with a central underground section and interchange points with all the other LRT lines; a possible southern extension (Los Bermejales-Bellavista) is considered. Line 4 will have a crucial role for the network efficiency, thanks to its circular shape; it should be mostly ground level totally segregated from road traffic.
In middle term, it's expected a circular tram line (Tranvia de Aljarafe) connecting some municipalities of the Aljarafe region to Sevilla. At least 3 interchanges stops (tranvia/light metro) must be mentioned: Ciudad Expo, Cavaleri, San Juan Alto. This 28 km long line will be realized in 4 phases (ph.1: Coria del Rio-Mairena del Aljarafe; ph.2: Mairena-Burmujos; ph.3:Bormujos-San Juan de Aznalfarache; ph. 4: Bormujos-Valencina), serving many important polarities (Bormujos Hospital, Universidad San Pablo-CEU, poligono PISA,etc.).
