St. Petersburg
The first plans for an elevated rapid transport system in St. Petersburg were developed at the end of XIX century, but they were abandoned after the explosion of the October Revolution and the tranfer of the Russian capital to Moscow. The great development of the city brought new concrete plans in 1940, when the construction of an underground metro line started, in order to connect the main railways stations located in the urban area; because of the II Woorld War, the first section (Ploshchad Vosstaniya-Avtovo) of line 1 (currently 29.6 km long) opened only in 1955, followed by various extensions (in 1958 - under Neva River-, 1970 and 1978). Line 2 (currently 30.1 km) started its service in 1960 with Tekhnologichesky Institut-Park Pobedy section; it was extended later towards south (1770, 1972) and north (1963, 1982, 1988, 2006). In years '60s another line was created (line 3, currently 22.5 km), with an initial section from Vasileostrovskaya to Ploshchad Alexandra Nevskogo; this line, which connects Vasilievsky Island to the city center and to some industrial districts located on the right bank of Neva River, has been extended till years '90s (in 1970, 1979, 1981, 1984, 1991). Line 4 (or Pravoberezhnaya) was originally created to connect the city center to the eastern residential suburbs on the right bank of Neva River, but the delays for the construction of the southern section of a fifth line (line 5) suggested the opportunity to attach temporally the northern section of the future line 5 to line 4, before being detached after line 5 completion. Starting from that time, the new line 4 terminal is located at Spasskaya stop.
Line 5 opened on 20 December 2008 running from Komendantskiy Prospekt to Volkovskaya, mostly along a section previously belonged to line 4 (Sadovaya-Komendantskiy Prospekt); it's planned a southern extension up to Prospekt Slavy (2012).
Other 2 lines are expected in long term plans (2050), doubling the current network extension.
