In Thessaloniki a modern APM metro line is going to be realized after many years of troubles and delays; infact, in 2005 Line 1 contract has been awarded to a consortium which includes Ansaldo Trasporti.
The track will follow Neos Sidirodromikos Stathmos (new railway station)-Nea Helvetia route, running underneath some of the most important urban axis (Egnatia, N. Egnatia, Delfon, etc), mostly in bored tunnel (7.7 km of single track tunnels for each direction), with the remaining sections realized with "cut&cover" method.
A south-eastern (Patrikiou-Kalamaria) and northern (Dimokratias-Stavroupoli) extensions should follow in the next future.
