Rome current metro network is articulated in 2 lines (A, B) with a common stop in Roma Termini.
Line B (opened in 1955) runs along Laurentina-Roma Termini-Rebibbia track; after the opening of the first stretch, Line B (currently 19 km long) was extended in 2012 from Bologna to Conca d'Oro (the so called "Line B1" intermediate branch about 3.9 km long, to be extended towards P.zale Jonio in the next future).
Line A was opened in 1980, connecting Battistini to Anagnina and passing through Roma Termini (where it interchanges with Line B). Although works begun in 1964, the first stertch has been completed oly in 1980 because of many technical and archaeological problems (initially it was chosen the "cut&cover" technique, but years later works were completed with bored tunnel method). In 1999 Line A reached the current length of 18 km thanks to Ottaviano-Battistini western extension.
A third line (Line C, 25 km) is under construction, connecting Clodio Mazzini (north-west) to Pantano (east). Line C (driverless) will run underground crossing Prati, the very central area of P.za Venezia, Colosseo and S. Giovanni, Pigneto, Centocelle, Alessandrino, Grande Raccordo Anulare; from this point it will run ground level up to Pantano terminal. Some of the stops will have a crucial role in the interchange with Line A (Ottaviano, S. Giovanni), Line B (Colosseo) and suburban railway FR1 to Fiumicino Airport (Pigneto).
The whole system will be completed by a fourth line (Line D); it will be about 20 km long running mostly north-south from Talenti (Ojetti terminal) to EUR (Agricoltura Terminal), with many interchange stops with the other metro lines (Line A: P.za di Spagna; Line B/B1: EUR Magliana, Jonio; Line C: P.za Venezia) and the suburban railways. The first section to be realized should be Fermi-Salario (11 km). The tender procedure is currently suspended.
