POTSDAM
Potsdam, thanks to its location close to Berlin and to its artistic and architectonic heritage, is daily interested by remarkable flows of visitors.
A tramway network was opened in 1907; currently it's organized in 5 lines, joining each other at Platz der Einheit (city center).
Tramway net (25.5 km) interchanges in the central area with national railways (Deutsche Bahn) and, recently, it has been extended in order to reach new residential areas (Robert Baberske Strasse/Kirschsteigfeld, Bornstedter Feld).
The track runs in reserved lanes (75% of its extension), with no interferences with road traffic; the annual ridership is about 17 million passengers.
Rolling stock was partly renewed in 1998, by the introduction of some modern Siemens Combino low floor trams (in addiction to older Tatra tramcars); Potsdam has been the first town in Europe to adopt this kind of vehicles.
