OportoIn the years '90s Oporto local authority decided to reduce the heavy traffic congestion by the introduction of a new public transport network, based on an underground section through the city center (7 km, with an important interchange point at Sao Bento railway station) and on other ground level segments (63 km) obtained by the conversion of some tracks of elder metric gauge local railways.
The first section opened in 2002 (Blue Line, along city center-Matosinhos-coast route), while the many extensions followed in the next years (2004, 2005, 2006, 2008, 2011), with some other expected in middle-long term.
