Neaples
Neaples tramway network (opened at the end of XIX century) was constanly reduced in years '50s, with many section dismissed; in 1954 the tramway lines were 36 km long, in 1970 only 22 km, in 1999 just 14 km. There are currently only 2 lines operating: S. Giovanni-P.zza Vittoria, Poggioreale-S. Giovanni.
The local 1977 transports masterplan ("Piano Comunale dei trasporti") and, successively, "Piano delle 100 Stazioni" (2003) planned to invert this trend, renewing and upgrading the tramway system, with the goal to have in 2011 more than 19 km of operating tracks.
Works are going on to extend the existing lines from Poggioreale to Stadera and from P.zza Vittoria to P.zza Sannazzaro. Two new sections are planned: P.zza Garibaldi-Ponticelli and a northern branch from P.zza Garibaldi towards Piscinola/villaricca. A new low-floor rolling stock (Ansaldo Sirio) has been introduced since 2005.
