Marseille
Marseille has a 2 lines metro network; it's mostly underground and served by rubber tyres vehicles. Lines M1 and M2 share the interchange stops of Castellane and Gare St. Charles (railway station). M1 opened in 1977, running along Malpasse-St. Just route, completely underground with the exceptions of a ground level intermediate section (located in the middle of a motorway) and of the terminal section of La Rose/Technopole (viaduct); an extension of this line (La Timone-La Fourragere, totally underground) opened on May 2010. M2 opened in 1984, running from Bourgainville to Ste.Margarite-Drome, totally underground except for the 2 terminal sections (on viaduct); an extension from Ste.Margarite-Dromel to St. Loup-Pagnol is planned.
Marseille also has an historical tramway network (since 1876 with the first horse tram, electrified at the beginning of '900) which achieved a remarkable extension in years '30 before being constantly reduced and dismantled after the second world war, with the exception of Line n. 68 (Noailles-Alhambra). In 2004 this trend has been reversed: important works were launched in order to realize a modern tram network consisting in 2 lines (T1: Noailles-Les Caillols; T2: Euromediterranee-Blancharde). A first phase of T1 and T2 lines opened on 30 June 2007; both lines have been completed on 26 September 2008, while T2 has been extended from Euromediterranee Gantes to Euromediterranee Arenc on 27-03-2010. Metro and tramway interchange at Joliette, Noailles, Cinq Avenues, Castellane and Blancharde stops.
