Docklands Light Railway (DLR) Line is an automated metro mainly in viaduct with limited underground and ground level segments, opened in 1987 with the aim to serve East End and Docklands northern areas (at the time very residual and under utilized) trying to spin off them again, thanks also to the other connections with the traditional metro network and the regional railways.
Actually the 31 km DLR system is constituited by 4 branches (Stratford-Lewisham; Bank-Lewisham; Bank-Woolwich Arsenal; Tower Gateway-Beckton) converging at Poplar.
The first phase (1987, 13 km) was Island Gardens-Tower Gateway plus Stratford-Poplar, followed in 1991 by Bank extension (1 km with the crucial connection with the traditional metro network), in 1994 by Beckton extension (1994), in 1999 by the Lewisham extension (4 km), in 2005 by the London City Airport and King George V one (4 km; a further extension up to Woolwich Arsenal opened at the beginning of 2009). Another important extension from Canning Town to Stratford (6 km) was completed on August 2011, mostly running along a former North London Railway section.
