West London Tram (WLT) is a tramway line planned between Shepherd's Bush and Uxbridge town centre, passing through Uxbridge Road, Acton, Ealing, West Ealing, Hanwell, Southall and Hayes End.
WLT concept is to accommodate the anticipated growth in demand for public transport along one of the country’s busiest public transport corridors and to tackle congestion on the Uxbridge Road.
Many interchange points (with metro and railway systems) will be located along the route:
- Uxbridge station (Metropolitan and Piccadilly metro lines);
- Ealing Broadway (National Railways, Central and District metro lines);
- Ealing Common (Piccadilly and District metro lines);
- Shepherds Bush Central Line (Central metro line).
NOTE: the new line (20 km, 40 stops) should replace some bus services currently set on the same route. WLT project had been postponed indefinitely in october 2006, following the results of a survey among the residents involved with this route; the scheme could be reconsidered after the Crossrail project (new railway connections under central London from Paddington to Liverpool Street station) completion (2017), if further public transport capacity is needed after Crossrail is up and running.
