Kiev
Kiev was the third city of the former USSR to open a metro network, after Moscow and St. Petersburg; the whole system currently consists in 3 lines (total length: 60 km), with more than 600 millions pax/year and 2 more lines in long term plans (part of them will be obtained by the upgrading of some existing LRT-Fast Tram sections). The network has the typical sovietic morphology, with radial lines constituting a triangle in the city center. The first plans were developed in 1916, but they were delayed and posponed because of Bolshevik revolution and II World War; works for the first section (Vokzal'na-Dnipro) of the first line (L1, Sviatoshynsko-Brovarska Line, currently about 23 km long) could begin only in 1949, to be completed in 1960. This initial stretch was extended towards east (crossing Dnepr River - in 1965 - joining residential areas) and west (joining other important residentail suburbs - Sviatoshyn, Bilychi- in 1963, 1971, 2003).
Works for a second line (L2, Kurenivsko-Chervonoarmiyska Line, currently 18.5 km long), began in 1970, with the official opening of the first segment in 1976, later on extended in northern direction (Obolon - in 1980 - and other residential areas - in 1982 -) and south-western direction (in 1981, 1983, 2010, 2011).
The third line (L3, Syretsko-Pecherska Line, currently 23.9 km long) opened in 1989 (works started in 1981), with an initial short section (3 stops), later on extended along north-east/south-west axis (M3 crossed Dnepr River in 1991/1992, joining Poznyaky and Kharkivsky residential suburbs in 1994 (the further Boryspils'ka-Chervony Khutir extension opened on May 2008), while from the beginning of the second half of years '90s it was progressively developed towards Syrets in northern direction - 1996, 2000, 2004).
The initial section of a fourth line (L4, Podilsko-Voskresenska Line) is under construction, in order to connect Kiev northern side (Raduzhnaya stop, in Troieschyna district) to Trukhaniv Island businnes center and later on to Podil region (Lukianivs'ka stop). After this section predicted opening (2015), other works could extend L4 at both terminals: in southern direction towards Zhuliany Airoport and Kiltseva Doroha (2025) passing through Starokyivska Hora, the north-western side of the city center and the railway station, in northern direction with 2 branches (an eastern one up to Bratislavska and a northern one up to Vulytsia Myloslavs'ka annexing an existing LRT/Fast Tram line which will be upgraded. This last section will only temporally operate as a L4 segment, because it is going to be a part the future fifth line (L5, Livoberezhna, expected for 2030). One of the main features of L4 is to provide new interchange stops to the other lines of the network (Vokzal'na: L1; Podils'k: L2; Lukianivs'ka: L3), besides the overcrowded existing apexis of the initial triangle formed by L1, L2, L3.
