Kazan
Kazan (capital of Tatarstan) opened the first stretch Kremlyovskaya-Gorki of its first metro line (Tsentralnya Liniya) in 2005, just in time for the millennium of its foundation; Tsentralnya Liniya (Central Line) is a part of an ambitious plan which consists in a 3 lines network (Tsentralnya Liniya, Vokzalnaya Liniya, Privolzhsko-Savinovskaya Liniya; total length: 46 km), with some important transfer stops (Ploshchad' Gabdully Tukaya, Dekabrystov, Gorki, Moskovskaya), besides a suburban light railway line towards the airport to be completed by Universiad in 2013.
Although an initial plan (in years '30s) for a surface urban rail line hasn't been realized, the construction of a real metro network was approved by USSR govern only in 1979, when Kazan population overtook the million of inhabitants. During Soviet Uninion crisis works were delayed but did never completely stop, so that the first section of Tsentralnya Liniya could be opened in 2005, followed by Gorki-Prospekt Pobedy on 26-12-2008; currently works are going on to extend the line at the northern terminal (Kremlyovskaya-aviastroitel’naya).
