Geneve
Geneve is located in the south of the omonimous lake, near to the French border; because of its geographical crucial position (it's near to France, it's on the railway route to Lausanne and it has an important airport) and the high percentage of cars per inhabitant (close to 50%) Geneve has shown in the years many traffic congestion problems.
In 1925 Geneva had a 125 km long public transport system (tramway+local railways), almost completly dismissed in the next years; in 1969 there was only a single tramway line (line 12, 9 km).
From 1995 the original tramway network has been upgraded again (thanks also to the local Masterplan 2002-2003); that year the existing tramway line was extended north to Cornavin railway station (1.6 km), while in 1996-1997 it has be extended south to Palettes (1 km).
In 2003 another branch was opened (tram Secheron, 2.2 km) along the route Cornavin-Place de Nations (ONU palace).
At the end of 2004 the so-called tram Acacias extension (Lancy Pont Rouge-Acacias-Plainpalais, 2.3 km, 7 stops) started its service, followed in 2006 by tram Lancy, which closes into a ring the southern part of the net thanks to Grand-Lancy new section (Lancy Pont Rouge-Palettes, 1.5 km, 5 stops) and at the end of 2007 by the first section of tram Meyrin (Cornavin-Avanchets). Tram Meyrin was extended in 2009 with Avanchet-Meyrin Graviere section; a further extension from Jardin Alpin to CERN opened on 2 May 2011.
Works are going on for another tram line (the so-called tram Cornavin-Onex-Bernex or TCOB) which will connect the city center to Lancy, Onex and Bernex agglomerations (at Bernex it will be also located an important interchange parking).
