The first line of a new LRT system opened in Cagliari on 17 March 2008; Line 1 connects Cagliari (P.zza Repubblica) to the neighboring agglometration of Monserrato (S. Gottardo). The whole network (once completed 8 new lines) will consist in 2 urban rings and 4 suburban branches (towards Sestu, Elmas Airport, Settimo S. Pietro/Senorbì, Quartu), also thanks to the renewal (electrification) of local metric gauge existing railways due to a new suburban usage.
In the urban areas the signalling system is simply based on traffic lights.
