BELGRADE
Belgrade
Since years '50s Belgrade considered the opportunity to set up a metro system, but an hard debate about the system tipology (metro or LRT) and the latter civil war (beginning of years '90s) caused heavy delays. After year 2000 a decision was taken in favour of a LRT system based on 3 main lines, even if the construction of the main line (L1-Central Line) has been posponed from 2006 to 2008 also beacause of a fierce opposition which still supports a conventional metro system hipotesy.
Line 1 will connect Tvornicka Staion (west) to Ustanicka Station (east), passing through Novi Beograd, crossing Sava River (on viaduct) before going underground from Varos Kapija to Vukov Sponenik (this central underground section serves Central Square, Nokola Pasic Square and the Faculty of Law). From Vukov Sponenik to Ustanicka Station the track proceedes ground level again. Two future potential interchange points with the other planned LRT lines (L2, L3, joining each other at Pozeska Station) are located at Pravni Fakultet and Proleterske Solidarnosti stops.
NOTE: project has been suspended in favour of a metro system (to be planned).
