Line 9-10 Station
Barcelona
Barcelona Metro is currently more than 150 km long, articulated in 11 lines (including Line 9/10, under construction), partly operated by Transports Metropolitans de Barcelona or TMB (the properly said metro lines: L1, L2, L3, L4, L5, L9/L10, L11) and partly by Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat de Catalunya or FGC (suburban lines: L6, L7, L8). L3 was the first to be opened in 1924 (it's currently 19 km long, from Zona Universitaria to Le Canyelles), followed by L1 in 1926 (19 km, from Hospital de Bellvitge to Fondo); L5 (Cornella Centre - Horta, 19 km) opened in 1959, L4 (Trinitat Nova - La Pau, 19 km) in 1974.
Line 2 (opened in 1995) and Line 11 (opened in 2003) are the most recent lines of Barcelona Metro. L2 runs totally underground; starting from PEP Ventura it joins La Pau using a preexisting branch of L4, then it crosses the small district of Sant Adrià de Besòs (Verneda, Artigues) up to Badalona. An extension from Pep Ventura to Barcelona Pompeu Fabra opened on 11 July 2010. Altought the project goes back to years '60s only few sections of the lines were built in years '70s and it's been completed among the works concerning 1992 Olympics Games. L2 uses a rolling stock (2 cars per each vehicle) similar to the L11 one.
L11 is the most recent line of the whole network; it opened in 2003, running from Can Cuias to Trinitat Nova. It's a light rail with a single track infrastructure, with the possibility of vehicles (with 2 cars configuration) crossing in the middle point of the line. It runs completely underground except to a short section close to Torre Barrò/Valbona Station and even if at the moment it's a single track line, it's has been predisposed to a future possibility to a double track upgrade. L11 runs throught a low density part of the town, caracterized by a complex orography; these elements have been decisive in the light infrastructure choice. Works started in 2001 and were completed in 2003; during 2009 platform doors will be set up and the line will be completely automated.
The first secion (Can Peixauet-Can Zam) of a driverless line (L9/10) opened on 13 December 2009, followed by Can Peixauet-Bon Pastor/Gorg (on 18 April 2010) and by Bon Pastor-Sagrera (on 26 June 2010) extensions; once completed, it will connect Badalona and Santa Coloma to Zona Franca suburb and El Prat International Airport, with a 42 km long track (totally underground).
Long term plans (2015) include other 2 lines: L12 (or R3) connecting the city center to Baix Llobregat, Esplugues de Llobregat, Sant Joan Despi and Sant Just Desvern, besides L13 (ligth metro, similar to L11) connecting the city center to the hilly area of Can Ruti Hospital (in Badalona).
