ALICANTE
Alicante region (the most attractive touristic area in the south-eastern part of Spain) has more than 90 km of metric gauge railways (Alicante-Denia route). In years '90s the local transport operator (Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat de Valencia-FGV, that also operates Metro Valencia) decided to upgrade this network, by a massive electification of the tracks and the conversion of single track sections into double track ones, transforming the urban sections in a modern tram system (1999-2003: Alicante-Altea segment).
The diesel trains along Denia-Altea-Alicante route are currently limited to Benidorm, where there's an interchange stop with a tram-train line (Line 1) to Alicante. Line 1 uses both tramway (Luceros-Venta Lanuza) and train (Venta Lanuza-Benidorm) sections.
The network is completed by 3 tramway urban lines (Line 3: Luceros-Venta Lanuza; Line 4: Luceros-Avenida Naciones; Line 4L: Sangueta-Puerta del Mar) which share some sections with Line 1.
Some urban tram route extension are planned (an undergroung section from Luceros to the Railway Station-Nodo Multimedial, a further western extension towards Babel), as well as a second Line 2 (Railway Station/Nodo Multimedial-Saint Vincent del Raspeig) serving the main hospital and the university campus.
