DESCRIPTION
The first line (Line 1) of a new LRT system opened in Cagliari on 17-03-2008, connecting Cagliari (P.zza Repubblica terminal) to the neighboring agglometration of Monserrato (S. Gottardo terminal); Line 1 was extended on 14-02-2015 from Monserrato San Gottardo to Policlinico.
The second line (Line 2) opened on 13-04-2015 running from Monserrato San Gottardo (where it interchanges with Line 1) to Settimo San Pietro.
Both lines are mostly single track (with intermediate by-passes at the stops); they run almost totally ground level (except for the elevated section between San Gottardo and Policlinico) with priority at crossroads (regulated by traffic lights).
Cagliari P.zza Repubblica-Monserrato San Gottardo section was obtained by the reconversion of the urban segment of Cagliari-Isili railway line (now terminating at Monserrato San Gottardo); Line 2 alignment is served both by tramcars and local trains (serving Cagliri-Isili railway route), in tram-train mode.
