CAEN
Caen
In Caen Line A and B of the tram-on-tyre system (Transport sur voie reservee or TVR) run from north-north/east towards south-south/west.
The two lines share their track running parallel in the central section; they diverge in two branches at each one of the terminals. The rubber tyre rolling stock is guided by a central "V" shape rail; the commercial speed is about 20 km/h, 30% higher than buses (21 bus lines complete the pubblic transport network). Many parking areas and lanes reserved to bikers and pedestrians are located along the route, in order to make easier the modal interchange. The tram-on-tyre choice allows the track to overtake the remarkable vertical gradients (up to 13%) which characterize many parts of Caen central areas.
NOTE: at the end of 2011 Caen municipality decided to replace TVR system with a conventional tramway (expected completion: 2018)
